R.C. Gorman created Julia in 1986 in an edition of 150 — a papercast from the gallery’s collection. The papercast process casts the artist’s imagery in layered paper relief, catching light along every contour in a way flat prints cannot.
Like the rest of the gallery’s holdings, this work reflects Gorman’s devotion to the Native American women and Southwest landscapes that made his name. Papercasts show to advantage under raking light, where the layered relief throws soft shadows across the surface. A strong addition to collections of Native American fine art, papercast work, and the art of the Southwest.
