Atsah (Eagle) is a 1969 R.C. Gorman original drawing that reduces the wrapped, hooded figure — a motif Gorman returns to again and again — to a single flowing contour line. The hooded robed figure stands in profile, almost a column of light against a roughly brushed graphite ground, with just the barest suggestion of a brown-toned face peeking from the hood. Dated 1-22-69 in his hand, this is a remarkably early Gorman piece pre-dating most of his recognized editioned work. As a one-of-a-kind early original, Atsah (Eagle) is an important archival acquisition for serious collectors of early R.C. Gorman drawings and Navajo fine art history.
